First Sentence

"The Word came first. That was Volume One. It came in the fragment Brother Aldric scattered across continents and the manuscript he saw burned and the seven cities he chose not to name. It came in the patterns my grandfather circled in red ink and never explained. It came in the cave in Strahov, in the room beneath Bohemia, in the page I copied from a page he had copied from a page that had been copied from no human hand at all. The Body came second. That was Volume Two. The grimoire of an instrument learning to receive what it had been built to receive. The 111.2 hertz that became my permanent frequency. The eight hundred mornings I spent at this desk copying what cannot be copied, transcribing what cannot be transcribed, recording what survives only when the recorder admits that some things are larger than the record. I closed that book in December. I have not opened it since. The Listening is what came after, and what I am still learning the language for. There is no manuscript here. There is no chamber. There is no instrument. There is only the room your body makes when you sit down and stop trying. The kingdom of God is within you. It always was."
